Spotlight with HDM Energies

Leading the Change in Solar Energy for UK Schools and SMEs

Founded in 2022, HDM Energies has quickly established itself as a leader in rooftop solar installations, with a mission to make clean energy both accessible and affordable for schools and SMEs across the UK. Through its fully funded solar model, the company helps organisations cut energy bills, reduce carbon emissions, and boost EPC ratings—all without any upfront costs. With an ambitious goal to deploy 2.5GW of rooftop solar by 2030, HDM Energies is empowering institutions to save up to 40% on electricity while unlocking opportunities for EV charging and new revenue streams from public charging services.

As part of the wider HDM Group, which includes HDM Solar (Wholesale)—the UK’s fastest-growing renewables distribution business, HDM Energies benefits from direct access to high-quality products at competitive prices. Combined with a nationwide network of trusted installers, this integrated approach ensures clients receive seamless support from consultation through to post-installation.

Proven Experience in Schools and Beyond

HDM Energies is no stranger to delivering impactful projects. From sports clubs and leisure centres to office blocks and industrial buildings, the company has successfully deployed solar systems that deliver measurable savings. Its pipeline of school installations across England is temporarily delayed pending Department for Education (DfE) feedback on Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), but its commitment to the education sector is unwavering.

Backed by £100 million in funding, HDM Energies is positioned to deploy 125MW of solar capacity, helping more than 1,000 schools and SMEs across the UK benefit from solar power. The potential impact is significant: an average 100kW system can save around £6,000 in the first year, generate more than £200,000 in savings over 15 years, cut 20 tonnes of carbon annually, and improve a building’s EPC rating by a full band.

The Current Landscape

While the Treasury’s recent pause on PPAs in England has created temporary delays, demand for solar solutions in the education sector has surged. HDM Energies is actively working with the DfE to resolve these challenges and ensure publicly funded schools can benefit.

“The benefits of solar are excellent from both a financial and environmental perspective, but the upfront costs can be prohibitive. HDM Energies was founded to provide a solution that delivers savings from month one—even for buildings with relatively low roof space or energy consumption.”

The company emphasises that while English publicly funded schools await clarity, solar PPAs remain available to privately funded schools and institutions in other UK nations.

A Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, HDM Energies believes solar energy must play a central role in every school’s sustainability and financial strategy. By integrating solar panels with battery storage and EV charging, schools can reduce reliance on the grid, generate income, and contribute meaningfully to the UK’s decarbonisation goals.

The company’s innovative “Energy for All” Power Purchase Agreement offers fixed-rate electricity costs for 10–25 years with zero upfront investment. Uniquely, the model accommodates systems as small as 30kWp and can include EV chargers at no extra cost—either for staff use or as public charging points to create additional revenue.

As the push for net zero accelerates, HDM Energies is committed to ensuring schools and SMEs aren’t left behind. By turning unused rooftops into renewable power stations, the company is helping institutions secure both a sustainable future and long-term financial resilience.
