Spotlight: Andrea Bowen, Founder of Portable Mirrors

We’re excited to share our latest client spotlight with Andrea Bowen of Portable Mirrors, who recently completed a written interview with us about her journey and insights.

Q: When did you take up your position with the company and what does your role involve?

Andrea Bowen: I founded Portable Mirrors, in 2007, because I saw a real gap in the market for high-quality, safe, and versatile mirrors that could be easily moved and adapted for different spaces. As Director, my role is incredibly varied — I lead on strategy, product development, and client relationships. A big part of my work involves engaging directly with schools, colleges, and universities to understand their needs and ensure our mirrors genuinely support teaching and learning.

Q: What specific products does your company offer to schools or educational institutions?

Andrea Bowen: We provide a range of high-quality mirrors including floor to ceiling mirror installations and portable mirrors designed for education settings — from dance studios and performing arts halls to sports facilities and classrooms. We also offer Demonstration Mirrors that can be desk or ceiling mounted, popular for cookery, arts or science demonstrations. Our mirrors are shatterproof, easy to manoeuvre, and built with safety in mind, making them perfect for schools that need flexible, multi-purpose solutions.

Q: Could you walk us through the key features and benefits of your mirrors and how they’re tailored for educational institutions?

Andrea Bowen: The key benefits are safety, mobility, and durability. All our mirrors are manufactured to be shatterproof, so teachers and parents have complete peace of mind. They’re mounted on sturdy, lockable wheels, meaning they can be moved quickly between classrooms, gyms, or halls. Schools don’t need a fixed studio — our mirrors create one instantly, allowing staff to maximise existing space without expensive renovations.

Q: How does your company approach pricing and affordability to ensure accessibility for a wide range of educational institutions?

Andrea Bowen: Affordability is really important to us. We work hard to offer competitive pricing and also provide flexible options, and often have school offers throughout the year, so schools can build up their equipment over time. Our mirrors are built to last, which means they represent long-term value rather than a short-term expense.

Q: How do you stay updated with the evolving needs and trends within the education sector?

Andrea Bowen: We’re in constant dialogue with teachers, headteachers, and department leaders, as well as attending education trade shows and sector events. This feedback loop ensures our mirrors are continually adapted to suit real-life classroom and studio environments.

Q: Can you share any upcoming projects or initiatives that your company is working on to better serve the education market?

Andrea Bowen: We’re have just designed a demonstration mirror that is already proving popular with many schools UK wide, these demonstration mirrors can be ceiling or table mounted. , as well as collaborative projects with local councils to bring performing arts facilities into community schools. We’re also developing new resources to help schools integrate mirrors more effectively into PE and performing arts lessons.

Q: How does your company differentiate itself from competitors within the education market?

Andrea Bowen: Our focus is on quality, safety, and service. Every mirror we provide is built to professional standards but designed with education in mind. Unlike many competitors, we don’t just sell — we consult. We advise schools on the best configuration for their space, ensuring they get real value and usability from the mirrors.

Q: Can you share examples of successful case studies or testimonials from schools using your mirrors?

Andrea Bowen: Absolutely. We’ve had fantastic feedback from schools who’ve used our mirrors to transform multi-purpose halls into professional dance or drama studios. One secondary school told us their performing arts students felt a huge boost in confidence after having access to proper mirrors for rehearsals — and this translated directly into improved exam results.

Q: What specific challenges or pain points do your mirrors aim to address for schools, teachers, or students?

Andrea Bowen: Space is always a challenge for schools. Our mirrors help solve that by turning any hall, classroom, or gym, and can also be used outdoors and turn any space into professional teaching space instantly. They also address safety concerns because they’re shatterproof and secure, which is vital when working with large groups of students. For teachers, the mirrors allow more efficient teaching because they can correct posture, movement, or form visually.

Q: How has feedback from educators and administrators influenced the development and improvement of your mirrors over time?

Andrea Bowen: Feedback has been crucial. For example, schools asked for mirrors that were easier to move between floors or across larger campuses, so we refined our wheelbase system to make transport smoother. We also added lockable casters after teachers highlighted the need for absolute stability during lessons, and ensure they stackable when not inuse. And make a larger size mirror as we were asked for this option.

Q: Can you discuss any strategic partnerships or collaborations your company has forged to enhance its offerings in the education sector?

Andrea Bowen: We’re proud to collaborate with local councils, leisure centres, and performing arts organisations to bring mirrors into shared spaces, often benefitting both schools and the wider community. These partnerships allow us to support extracurricular programmes as well as formal education.

Q: Can you share insights into your company’s scalability plans and how you envision expanding your reach within the education sector in the coming years?

Andrea Bowen: We’re focused on building our presence nationwide and across Europe, where we already have strong links. We plan to expand our distribution network and continue tailoring our product range for the education sector. Ultimately, our vision is that every school, regardless of size or budget, should be able to access the benefits of professional-standard mirrors.

Q: What are your thoughts on the future of education, and how do you see your company evolving to meet changing demands?

Andrea Bowen: I think the future of education will be increasingly centred on creativity, wellbeing, and adaptability. Schools need flexible spaces that can serve multiple purposes — from sport to drama to community use. Our mirrors are designed with that future in mind, and we’ll keep evolving to provide innovative, safe, and accessible solutions that help students thrive.
